What Is the Endocannabinoid System and What Is Its Role?

The endocannabinoid system (ECS) refers to a unique molecular system that is responsible for balancing and regulating several physiological processes in the body such as immune response, appetite, communication between cells, metabolism, and memory.

Through this system, cannabinoids can interact with the metabolic enzymes and receptors in the body to trigger the therapeutic effects.

In spite of the integral role played by the endocannabinoid system in our body, it was discovered only recently. The importance of the endocannabinoid system is also being understood by researchers and the medical community only in the past few decades.

The ECS involves 3 basic components: endocannabinoids, enzymes, and receptors.

Contrary to what most people believe, these 3 components of ECS are active in the body even when a person does not use cannabis or CBD oils. This marks why it is important to be aware of the role of ECS and the therapeutic benefits it offers to regulate the physiological processes.

Endocannabinoids

Endocannabinoids are molecules secreted by the body. They are similar to cannabinoids in CBD oil and help the internal functions of the body to run smoothly. These molecules are produced by the body as needed, which is why it can be difficult to find the optimum levels needed by a person.

Endocannabinoid receptors

Endocannabinoid receptors are found throughout the body. These receptors bind to endocannabinoids signaling the ECS to take action.

Endocannabinoids may target the receptors in the spinal nerves to relieve pain or bind to the receptors in the immune cells to indicate the body is experiencing inflammation.

Enzymes

Enzymes are responsible for the breakdown of endocannabinoids once they have carried out their intended functions.

The functions of ECS can contribute to homeostasis and restore the stability of the body’s internal environment.

It is important for physicians, nurses, and healthcare practitioners to be aware of the role of ECS in the management of health disorders. The abnormalities related to the ECS can increase the risk of several disorders linked to inflammation and immunological dysfunctions.

Hence, there is a need to assess the efficiency of ECS in patients with inflammatory, and autoimmune disorders to help them derive long-term relief from the symptoms such as pain and promote faster recovery.

You can learn more about ECS and its role in maintaining health by joining ‘15 AARC Approved CEU Webinar’ on both respiratory medicine and integrative medicine topics from 17th October to 20th October 2020 from 3 pm to 8 pm.

Some other topics we will discuss during the webinar include the right to die with dignity, triage healthcare assessment techniques, asthma and airway remodeling, aromatherapy for stress reduction, and the benefits of CBD oil.

You will also learn about the therapeutic uses of hypothermia, ethical delivery of hospital emergency services, acute lung injury, and ARDS.

You can interact with our panel of expert physicians and ask questions after the presentation.

Join the webinar to learn what ECS means and what the latest research studies have revealed about ECS, CBD oils, aromatherapy, asthma, airway remodeling, and much more.
